Social Reproduction

Social reproduction is the process of maintaining status quo socioeconomic frameworks across generations. These frameworks systematically privilege some and marginalize others as hegemonic ideology defines "appropriate" social roles for different socioeconomic classes. Schools have been identified as a locus of social reproduction, as students in working class, middle class, affluent professional and elite executive schools are taught curricula deemed to be appropriate for their respective status quo social classes. Part of the job of a teacher practicing critical pedagogy is to challenge the ideologies, structures and institutions that contribute to social reproduction.
