Scaffolding refers to the supports that a teacher provides to help students carry out a task. This support can take the form of help, through coaching or modeling, or through physical supports, like sentence starters or writing templates. Teachers scaffold in order to guide students through tasks that a student cannot yet manage individually. It involves teacher and student working together in a cooperative manner rather than just having the teacher tell the student what to do. In order for a teacher to accurately scaffold a student they need to be aware of their actual level of development before introducing steps to bring the student to their potential level of development. As students gradually learn to do the task on their own the scaffolding fades.
